[Rei is sitting on the roof with a book. It's sitting to the side with a pencil laid across the open pages. She's busily typing a messages into her device, then taking a few moments to look into the distance and enjoy the sun and the breeze before typing a new message.

She'll be up there all day. It's too crowded inside, but she won't be bothered by company.

I mean, is she ever bothered by anything?]

[She could probably see the faint look of surprise across his face.]

... I can't.

You shouldn't have to. It's something of yours.

You don't?

... What is it?

What is that?

[It sounded important.]

The suit that allows me to neurally connect to Eva within the entry plug.

[At that, Minato stopped leaning on his arm and sat up a little more.]

It is too important.

No.

There is no Eva here.

No, there isn't.

But it's from your home. It's yours.

It is useless to me.

It may be useful to you.

[No, he couldn't deny that it may come in useful.]

... I can't. It would be taking something of yours in order to benefit myself.

There is no sentimental value to it?

[She shakes her head.]

I'm giving it to you.

[He gently shook his head in response. No, he didn't want her to think he wasn't grateful for her kindness, but...]

... But why?

[She looks over at him.]

You need it. I do not.

[That was true in one respect.]

Yet why to me? Simply because I need it?

........

[... She had been way too kind to him. Even when he had troubled her just to understand her, her world, as complicated and complex as it was. Perhaps she didn't hold onto her memories or precious items from home as much as he did because of her origins or for whatever reason she had... And he felt like he had been imposing or taking away something from her that should be of so much value to her, and here she had just freely given it to him. For that simple reason.

He smiled, and it seemed that was all. But he knew just from his eyes that she would most likely notice how grateful he was and how much he valued their friendship.]

Thank you... Rei.

[For a second, Rei actually returns the smile. Then she looks away again, at the ocean beyond the grounds.]

[He caught the smile, and was happy enough to have seen it. Once she turned away, he relaxed more, again setting a hand down to lean against his arm.

The day had been so long, and it wasn't even over yet. It had been so physically draining and mentally exhausting. Running through both sides of the Mansion for what seemed like an endless amount of time, facing the idea of betrayal or distrust or doubt, having to worry about his mirror and his intentions, having to worry just as much about the safety of his friends during the event and while he was without his Evoker, and then to have it... work out somehow in some strange way despite it all with a friend, someone whom he had wanted to protect, and someone whom he now had even more reason to protect with his life.

He looked out over to the ocean as well, in the same direction she had. His vision had been getting a little blurry. He knew the feeling well, it was similar to the one he had before when he was on another rooftop not too long ago.

It didn't take long for him after the realization to lay down on his back beside her, let everything go, and fall asleep.]

[Rei notices when he falls asleep and doesn't bother him, though she remains beside him until he wakes up again. In the meantime, she resumes her texted conversation with her mirror.]
